About SeaSignal

Making marine science useful beyond academia.

SeaSignal gives businesses, students and researchers direct access to specialist training, scientific interpretation and research advice—without requiring a wider grant, consortium or formal research collaboration.

Scientific leadership

Science explained by the scientist doing the work.

SeaSignal is led by Dr Stephen Summers, a marine microbial ecologist specialising in biofilms, biofouling and environmental sequencing.

Stephen’s work has examined microbial communities on seawalls, marine infrastructure and plastic debris, as well as their role in coastal ecology and environmental change. His experience spans field research, experimental design, environmental sequencing, bioinformatics and ecological assessment.

He has taught and supervised researchers, delivered public and technical talks and worked with multidisciplinary teams seeking to apply microbial ecology to environmental and engineering questions.

Stephen works directly on each SeaSignal engagement—helping people understand the biological system, frame an answerable question and interpret evidence in a form they can use.

Experience across marine environments

Stephen’s research experience includes engineered coastlines, marine field stations, submerged infrastructure, plastic pollution and open-ocean microbial systems.

Across these settings, the recurring question has been how microbial communities change the surfaces and environments they inhabit, and how that knowledge can inform better environmental or technological decisions.

Collaborative by design

SeaSignal operates as a focused consultancy and a vehicle for collaborative research.

When a question requires additional laboratory capacity, regional facilities or complementary expertise, SeaSignal can draw on established scientific relationships in the UK and Singapore. Each project is shaped around the question rather than a fixed delivery model.
